Day 22 Story from Lake Kuohijärvi

On the 22nd of May I didn’t have a chance to swim, sadly. So instead of a usual blog post, here’s a story from Thursday the 28th of April, when I went swimming to Lake Kuohijärvi in Lammi to plan this blog. It was a remote location. I thought nobody would appear, especially weather being cloudy and cold, nevertheless location belonging to  Häme Recreation Area Association,  So I had a nice cup of coffee and a cake and started to take … Read More

Day 21 A moon swim

Tonight’s swim under a full moon was very special. I went for a swim after a party and felt the cool water of Lake Lohja extremely vitalizing and refreshing. It’s hardly dark at all during nights, so long white nights of summer are almost here. Location: Lohjanjärvi, Lohja

Day 20 Lake Lohja rocks

My home lake, Lake Lohja, was colder today than I presumed. Only around 13-14 °C in Kivessalmi Strait. So I put on my Aquaskin half suit and it helped me stay a bit longer in water. I wanted to explore the shoreline high rocks, which are partly so steep, that there’s no access by land, unless you have climbing kit with you. Many protected plants, especially various moss and lichens, grow on these calcareous rocks. Wagtails love to jump and fly … Read More

Day 13 Rissla falls

There are plenty of waterfalls in Lapland Highlands, but in Southern Finland they are rare. I was lucky to find Rissla Falls near to my home Lake Lohja, situated north of the historical Fiskars Village in Raasepori. There at first I had a nice swim in Lake Myllyjärvi, where from Risslaån River flows down. Then I had a dip in a small upstream pool. Finally I balanced myself to Rissla cascade and enjoyed a chilly shower under it. Nice paths go … Read More

Day 8 No bears, just swans

After training life saving inside a swimming hall all day, boy, what a relief it was to walk in Nuuksio National Park, to get some fresh air and to rinse chlorine off my skin in beautiful lake upland. Nuuksio is “Wild Woods and Lakes on Helsinki’s Doorstep”. So true. The Park is easy to reach by public transportation and there are over 80 little lakes and ponds in the area. And few brown bears and wolves… Today I didn’t reach the most … Read More

Day 7 Going crazy after one week…

Now it’s hard to pass by any lake without dipping or swimming in it. So I’m totally addicted after one week. Hooked to daily swims. Especially when weather has been really warm the whole week, and it feels like summer, although it’s early May. Water temperatures have risen to 12-16 °C in Southern Finland. Lake Puujärvi has sea like shores and clear water. Wind had blown warm surface water towards this beautiful beach. Few rocks and gulls here and there. I felt like … Read More

Day 6 Choose one of three

I was driving to seaside, but then I got interested in three tiny lakes, which were not far from the road (not very big road :). When I looked closer to the map, it was easy to choose, which where to go. Lake Pålsträsket is situated by a hill and there are no fields around it. There was also a path leading to it, so I decided to give it a go. I had a short walk through a forest and found … Read More

Day 5 Between islands

Today I had to settle for my home lake, Lake Lohja. It was a nice evening swim between two islands and sun going down behind a third island. To get to the small neck of land, I walked a slope path through a forest. There were tiny leaves in trees, but still the landscape looked naked. Yellow reeds sticked out of the water and new green growth waited underwater to pop up. Lucky to spend time by a big lake, … Read More
